What Happens When Real Life Shows Up?

Last week I spoke with an office manager who was trying to hold everything together.

A team member was out sick.

Childcare plans had fallen apart.

Patients still needed to be seen.

The schedule was full.

The doctor was counting on her.

At one point, she found herself bringing her children to work simply to keep things moving.

As I listened, I realized something.

Most office managers aren't overwhelmed because they're incapable.

They're overwhelmed because real life doesn't check the schedule before it shows up.

Leadership books don't teach this...

Leadership books rarely talk about this part.

They teach communication.

Accountability.

Systems.

KPIs.

What they don't talk about is what happens when real life collides with the workday.

The Sponge vs Compass

When real life happens, many leaders become sponges.

They absorb every problem, every emotion, every crisis, and every responsibility.

Before long they're carrying so much that they can no longer lead effectively.

A compass behaves differently.

A compass doesn't try to carry the travelers.

It provides direction.

2. What can wait until tomorrow?

3. What belongs to someone else?

Real life will happen.

Someone will get sick.

A child will need attention.

A team member will quit.

A patient emergency will appear.

The question isn't whether challenges will come.

Lead the day you're in.
