Why I Still Believe Leadership Is Worth It

Leadership isn’t always easy.

Some days you’re solving problems before you’ve finished your first cup of coffee.

Some days you’re having difficult conversations that no one else wants to have.

Some days you wonder if anyone notices the decisions you make to protect your team, your patients, or your practice.

And yes…

Sometimes people leave. That’s one of the hard parts of leading people.

But here’s what I’ve learned after years of working alongside dentists and leadership teams.

The difficult days aren’t the whole story. Because leadership also gives you something very few roles ever will.

You get to watch people grow.

You get to see the nervous new employee become the confident team member everyone relies on.

You get to watch someone discover strengths they didn’t know they possessed.

You get to help create an environment where people feel safe enough to ask questions, make mistakes, learn, and become better than they were yesterday. That’s an incredible privilege.

The best leaders don’t measure success only by production numbers or collections.

They measure success by people. Not because numbers don’t matter—they absolutely do.

But healthy numbers are often the result of healthy leadership.

I’ve watched practices transform because a doctor chose to listen instead of react.

I’ve watched office managers become confident directors because someone believed in them before they believed in themselves.

I’ve watched teams stop surviving and start enjoying coming to work.

Those moments don’t happen by accident. They happen because someone decided leadership was worth the effort.

Leadership isn’t about having all the answers.

It’s about creating an environment where people can find their best answers together.

No one remembers the leader who never faced challenges.

People remember the leader who stayed steady through them.

If you’re leading a dental practice today, I hope you remember this:

Your influence reaches far beyond today’s schedule.

Every conversation. Every encouragement. Every expectation you clearly communicate.

Every moment you choose patience over frustration. Every opportunity you give someone to grow.

Those moments shape people. And people shape practices.

Leadership isn’t always easy.

But it is one of the most worthwhile investments you’ll ever make.

Remember This Compass Moment…

The greatest reward of leadership isn’t building a successful practice.

It’s helping people become more successful than they believed they could be.

Leadership is worthwhile because every person you help grow becomes part of the legacy you leave behind.
